Barack Obama was pressed by Stephen Colbert to reveal whether aliens really exist after the former president said yes during an interview in February.
It all began during Obama’s appearance on the No Lies podcast, hosted by Brian Tyler Cohen. When Cohen asked whether aliens really existed, Obama replied: “Yes, they are real, but I’ve never seen them.”
The former president then elaborated on his answer, saying there was no secret department for studying aliens at Area 51 and that, if there were, he did not think that information would have been hidden from the president of the United States.
The statement, of course, shocked the world. Now, Obama has spoken about the subject again after being put on the spot by host Stephen Colbert during his appearance on The Late Show this week.
“Here’s the thing: for those of you who still think that we have little green men underground somewhere, one of the things you learn as president is that the government is terrible at keeping secrets,” Obama explained in the recent interview.
Addressing the famous conspiracy theories, the former president said that if aliens really existed somewhere in the United States, there would already be “selfies” with them on the internet.
“This idea of conspiracy theories… if there were aliens or alien spacecraft or anything under the control of the United States government that we knew about, saw, photographs, [anything], I promise you that some guy guarding the facility would have taken a selfie with one of the aliens and sent it to his girlfriend to impress her. There would be leaks,” he explained afterward.
Despite this, Obama said he has not lost hope that aliens are real and positioned himself as a potential envoy for first contact, should it ever happen. “I think I would be a good envoy for the planet. I have a diverse background, some experience in statecraft and diplomacy. I’m friendly. So I actually think I could do a pretty good job.”
